Hemingway-Flickr Plugin for WordPress (discontinued)

This plugin has been end-of-lifed. It has been succeeded by Slickr Gallery.

That said, if you want this older code, you are more than welcome to.

Get the latest version (0.5) 2006/06/23

Then follow these instructions. The file to edit is hemingway-flickr/flickr/lib.flickr.php

Hemingway-flickr is a
WordPress plugin that integrates your flickr photos with your WordPress blog, particularly when using the best theme for WordPress: Hemingway.

Not only does it create a gallery of photos for perusal, it integrates beautifully with the excellent Lightbox2 javascript. Lightbox darkens the page you are on, and throws the photo on top of the other content, as seen here (click the thumbnails):

0.5 – D3NIS fixed the IE6 major CSS issues! Woo hoo!! Thanks, D3NIS!

Regarding the Photo Album generated by Hemingway-Flickr.

Add this to the bottom of ??˙hemingway/style.css??˘ to fix the following problems in IE:

    - The main album image in the left-hand column doesn???t display correctly (only 1px vertical stripe is showing)
    - The header, footer and the “ancillary” containers have 0 margin on the left

    .highlight {
    height: auto;
    }
    #header, #primary, #ancillary , #footer {
    padding-left:30px;
    }
    #primary .inside .secondary {
    float:left;
    }

Not sure if this is the appropriate place for support requests, but for some reason my flickR sidebar widget, previously working fine for weeks, stopped updating yesterday. I tried unchecking the ‘activate flickR sidebar’ checkbox in the photo album options page, but now cant reactivate it – just stays off when i click it and press submit.
Also i cannot set a directory to show a photo album either, something that was again working a couple of days ago. I have made no changes to the site or back end that would coincide with this problem (that i can think of).
Have tried uninstalling and reintalling all components using latest versions, but no luck.
I note the plugin can still connect to my flickr account and retreive photos ok, just not display them on a sidebar widget of photoalbum page.
    Any advice appreciated.

  3. Rupert 06.25.06 / 3pm

This is a great place for posting troubles!
Do you have the Silas-Flickr plugin installed as well? My plugin and Joe’s use the same variables and database entries, so running both would produce a trainwreck.
Also, I don’t think my plugin comes with a sidebar widget(?)
(Making a hemmingway block from the Silas code is on my to-do list).

Are you referring to jPortfoilio’s hemingway block?

  4. Rupert 06.25.06 / 4pm

I’v eemailed you the widget parts of Joe’s Silas Flickr plugin… that should get your widget working again!

  5. julesvm 07.11.06 / 12pm

    what am I missing?
I’ve set everything up with no errors so far – my flickr page is responding, and my sets have been loaded into wp photo album admin page. I don’t know how to see my album front end. Whenever I set the path to album it just comes back blank and nothing has changed… I don’t know what I’m doing wrong and this could easily be an increadible noob mistake..
    any help would be great.
    thanks

  6. julesvm 07.11.06 / 12pm

update (sorry for the multiple post) – I think this has something to do with my permalink settings… I don’t know where it’s putting my album… but it’s definlty not where I want it. The link in the admin page sends me to a non-existing folder @
    /wp-admin/album/72157594195890563/New.html
when I’m trying to get it to go to a gallery folder in the root.
anybody know what i’m doing wrong?

  7. jonesmac 07.12.06 / 7pm

I have the same issue as julesvm

Photos show on my admin page and I don’t know how to see my albums. Everything works in the posts, but I cannot get my full albums to load.
“The link in the admin page sends me to a non-existing folder @
    /wp-admin/album/72157594195890563/New.html”
This is similar to what I get, and it will not save any changes I make. Please let me know asap. Great Plugin BTW! And lightbox does work great with it.

  8. Rupert 07.13.06 / 2am

Hmmm. Well, fortunately, Jules’ troubles magically went away on their own, so hopefully yours do too! Jules said he trid saving the gallery location many, many times and eventually it stuck. I take it you are NOT using the default wordpress URL format? ie: /?p=123 or something like that? This plugin need a non-default URI setup, eg: /2006/06/07 or /this-is-my-blogpost/

Er, keep trying, and hopefully things work out(?)

No idea what might be causing this…

  9. Rupert 07.13.06 / 2am

PS: to future posters, please add a link to your blog, it makes troubleshooting much more feasible.

  10. jonesmac 07.13.06 / 7am

Thanks for the reply. I am not using the default format.
    I use tegory%/%postname%
    my blog is http://resources.crossinglouisville.com/crossing-photos/

I left the broken link there to show what it is doing

  11. Rupert 07.14.06 / 1am

Hmmm. I’ve no real idea why it’s not working. Perhaps try Joe Tan’s plugin and see if you can get that working. If you can, my plugin uses the same preferences (eg: the wp_option “silas_flickr_baseurl” which doesn’t want to be set for some reason(?)).

  12. stu 07.15.06 / 7am

    Hi there!
I got exactly the same problem…
Installation went fine but I’m not able to save the photo album url and the link to the album is broke.
I’m not using the standard url format.

    Please help :-D

Anatomy of Nokomis Sailor (the blog, not the person)

I’ve reached a point with Nokomis Sailor at which I’m quite satisfied with it’s design and functionality, and I thought I should give credit where credit is due. Here’s a list of what’s being used:

    BlueHost.com: “…

  14. adyo 07.18.06 / 7pm

I am having the same problems as well – photo album URL not sticking and not knowing how/where to access it (or if it is even there),
but I am also having problems with my images displaying correctly. The thumbnails work but when I click on them, lightbox kicks in and the images fail to load (in Fireworks it looks like it’s constantly loading, and in Safari I get the blue rectangle and question mark like the image is missing).

Here’s the URL to the space where I was trying to post these images -
    http://www.adyo.info/wp/portfolio/

and http://www.adyo.info/wp/ being the main area of my wordpress site, of course.

  15. adyo 07.18.06 / 8pm

Looks like I got it working (getting the url to stick) by switching to Joe’s plug, punching it in there and then switching back to this one.

I am still have problems with posting images on other pages though..

    http://www.adyo.info/wp/portfolio/

  16. adyo 07.19.06 / 2am

My previous post(s) can be ignored, but this may be helpful to figuring out the problem most people are having.. I initially installed this plug and had the same problem – things wouldn’t work because it wouldn’t save the photo gallery URL. I deactivated it, activated Joe’s plugin instead. I went to configure it and was surprised to find that it allowed me to save the URL. Once that happened, I deactivated it and activated hemingway-flickr once again. Surprise! It works now, everything.

  17. Rupert 07.20.06 / 12am

Glad you got it working… I’ll look into these shenanigans when I have time (full time student in final semester).

  18. meca 07.31.06 / 6pm

    I strongly need some support…

Ive been looking for a good gallery and finaly found something that seems good for WP .. I upload the plugin, activate it and when I want to go to flickr.php to configure the gallery I just get a blank page, I can see the admin interface but only a blank page where the gallery config should be…any suggenstions on how to solve this?

I have WP 2.0.4..tried with 2.0.3 as well before I updated

  19. Kyle 07.31.06 / 9pm

I think I’m missing something. I got the plugin working (had to use the “enable Joe’s plugin” workaround to get the URL to take) but I don’t see how to add the block to Hemingway’s bottom bar. Should there be a “Flickr Album” block in Hemingway’s config screen?

  20. Kyle 07.31.06 / 9pm

Whoops. I should also mention you can see it in action at http://www.kyleandkelly.com/photos/

  21. Rupert 08.01.06 / 1pm

meca: perhaps try another web browser… you should be taken to flickr’s site where you give your plugin access to your photos.

Kyle: I’ve emailed you a work in progress Hemingway block… it’s not part of this release.

  22. alex 08.01.06 / 5pm

is there any documentation included with the download? I think it would be a great help for us installing…

  23. alex 08.02.06 / 8pm

I am having some issues with the photo album url… Oddly when I type gallery/ in the flickr settings and click “save settings” its not saving. Any help would be greatly appreciated…

  24. ngoossens 08.26.06 / 4pm

Here’s how i got it to work:

First, change the way permalinks work in your WordPress installation (Dashboard – options – permalinks). Now if you host your site like I am, WordPress will probably complain that the .htaccess file is not writable. In the permalinks page it will show the code you need to add to it. Upload it to the root of your blog directory (or the root of your website, depending on where your blog is running).

Other than that, I had the same issue as adyo. That means, install the plugin from Joe Tan first and let it do it’s magic. Disable it and enable this plugin, and the links should stick.

Rupert, this may be of interest to you – when I disable Joe Tan’s plug and enable yours, it is still using the flickr-cache directory in his plugin directory :)

  25. annumi 08.27.06 / 2pm

Can u tell me if it is possible to show only 2 of my sets from flickr instead of all of them? Where can I set it up?

  26. Rupert 08.28.06 / 12am

ngoossens: thanks very much for the detailed feedback. The cache directory issue is a major oversight… d’oh!

annumi: not really, unless you care to learn PHP and dig around in the scripts.

  27. Oktobr 08.30.06 / 4pm

After installing, activating and deactivating Joe Tan’s plugin, I got Hemingway-flickr and Lightbox working for article photos. Unfortunately, the photo album isn’t being created. My designated address for the album is http://www.kaleco.co.uk/image/photoset/

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  28. trzebiat 09.10.06 / 1am

    Hello!
    Great plugin.
I have one question. I am using lightbox with it. Is it possible to view bigger size images from my flickr account (now it is showing the medium size). What settings should I change?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Tomasz

  29. Rupert 09.10.06 / 2pm

Hi Tomasz, unless you know PHP, which I presume you don’t, there’s no immediate fix for this. Flickr shows that size by default. However, I will add an option in a future release to allow choosing specific sizes by default.

  30. webjedi 09.11.06 / 10pm

Hi…having a weird problem…well weird to me anyway…if I enable the hemingway-flickr plugin and hit “configure” I get the following error:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class silasflickrplugin in D:\DATA\Webspace….\blog\wp-content\plugins\hemingway-flickr\flickr.php on line 28

Which is weird cuz I never had the Joe Tan version installed…so I deactivate it and download the Joe Tan version and get the following error when I hit “configure”:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare class silasflickrplugin in D:\DATA\…blog\wp-content\plugins\silaspartners\flickr.php on line 28

Any idea what is going on?

  31. Rupert 09.12.06 / 2am

No idea whatsoever! That’s very odd!

  32. dalton 09.12.06 / 9am

I used Joe Tan’s plugin in the past, but recently upgraded to Hemingway, so this plugin seems like a better option for me. But, for some reason, it says that my Photo Album is not connected to a flickr account. When I click “Retrieve Flickr Permissions”, an empty page opens up, but nothing happens. Has something recently changed with the Flickr API?

I am using Firefox on Mac. My site is http://www.seriouslyexcited.net. Thanks.

  33. ngoossens 09.15.06 / 5pm

    Dalton,

Seems both Joe Tan’s and the Hemingway-flick plugin use the same API key. Flickr has expired the key. There is a fix:

    http://www.flickr.com/groups/tantannoodles/discuss/72157594279842288

make sure you change the lib.flickr.php file in the hemingway-flickr plugin folder, not the silas one as mentioned in the article above.

  34. dalton 09.16.06 / 6pm

    ngoossens -

Yup, that did the trick. The plugin is working beautifully now, both on my homepage and the new gallery. Thanks.

  35. russo 09.19.06 / 9pm

i really love this plugin, but can someone explain in plain english how to set this API up? i made a new one with flickr but the instructions on the thread with the fix is talking about a different plugin……… help plz? been banging my head on a wall for an hour now

  36. russo 09.19.06 / 9pm

wow, im an idiot, ive been tinkering with the wrong file, feel free to flip my car over and set it on fire

  37. miluco 09.20.06 / 1pm

    Hi, Rupert,
I really like the plug-in, I tried many times but still cant figure out what the problem is, I did everything that the above post mentioned. Now the most weird thing is it works in firefox browser, but not in IE 6 version 6.0.2900
I can see your gallery and other people’s gallery but just not mine. Do you have any idea?
    my link: http://milk.miluco.com/flickr/

  38. callis 09.25.06 / 12pm

I’m so anxious to use this plugin, it sounds great! I already love the lighbox so I was hoping to get this going to make inserting flickr pictures into my posts a little simpler. Everything installed and configured okay, but the “Photos” tab does not show up, nor does the standard WP photo upload tool. I’ve heard this is probably caused by a conflict with another plugin but I don’t know which one. Any ideas?

  39. benoflinux 10.29.06 / 7pm

I read everyone’s comments, but I’m still having trouble with this on my site. I am trying to make “Photo Album URL:” gallery, but when I click “save settings”, it doesn’t look like anything is saving. I have my permalinks as: / tegory%/%postname%/.

Any suggestions? My address is http://www.bentoll.com

  40. T.J. 11.03.06 / 12pm

I’ve noticed that when you click on a photo album within the Options –> Photo Album the “View this album on Flickr” link works correctly. However, if I navigate to my photos using a direct url like: http://www.snapshotlife.com/wp/photos/ then it doesn’t.

Is there any fix? I noticed the same thing happens on this webpage here as well.

  41. Rupert 11.03.06 / 2pm

That link you posted works fine for me… perhaps a browser caching issue? See here for example.

    BTW, I love your photos!

  42. pat_leung79 11.07.06 / 11am

Flickr Photo Album and Lightbox works great! However, the photoset index only shows my first 25 images. There is no “Next” or any link that corresponds to the next set of photos in my photo set. Please help! Thanks!

  43. Rupert 11.13.06 / 3am

T.J.: Sorry, I misunderstood your post. I’ll look into why the flickr page doesn’t load your album. They must have changed their API recently.

  44. Gwen 11.15.06 / 7am

    Hi Rupert,

My blog work with the hemingway’s theme. Neophyte, I try to put on page my gallery as you but I don’t arrive : http://www.bloguenotes.com/index.php/photos/

    What doesn’t go?…

By advance, thank you very much for your assistance. Cheers.

  45. Rupert 11.15.06 / 9pm

Gwen, I’ve just checked your site and I see your photos!

  46. Tristan 12.05.06 / 11am

The plugin works like a charm. Thanks!

Nevertheless, I’ve noticed that the syntax of the link under “View this album on Flickr” on the gallery page is wrong. i.e. a double slash instead of one at some point.

How can we fix that? Cheers.

  47. davina 01.06.07 / 5pm

    Hi, Rupert
I’m having the same problem as pat_leung79. the “photos” tab only displays 25 photos, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to access the remaining photos in my flickr account.
    fyi my url: davinasemo.org

how would you get around this???

thank you, this is the first website i’m making and so far, very fun!

The first let’s you insert a gallery as a single post or page – which will be crucial for letting Erika manage the site. The second implements that nifty lightbox effect.
